Just off the beach at Gonu Gonu Bara Bara island, near the former Milne Bay provincial capital of Samarai Island, is one of the best places in Papua New Guinea to experience the sheer majesty of manta rays.
I had been in the water with mantas before, but usually snorkeling and never near enough to get a really good image, so being so close to so many of these wonderful creatures was an experience I will always treasure!
I was luck enough to spend two days diving this terrific site on my first visit there on board the Golden Dawn and another full day on a later trip on the MV Chertan.
The images I captured enabled me to get my first front cover since 1989, when a shot taken on the Barrier Reef was used for the front cover of Gulf Air’s in-flight magazine Golden Falcon.
