SportDiving – Dec 2005: New Britain’s South Coast, Papua New Guinea

SportDiving - NB

The south coast of the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea is an extremely isolated area, with only one unpaved logging road connecting it to the more populated north coast of  the island.

I traveled to the south coast on the Star Dancer, and it’s legendary skipper Alan Raabe, soon after he had pioneered scuba diving in the area.

It was a memorable trip and the highlights were diving the superb reefs at the west entrance of Lindenhaven, the Mitsubishi sea plane wreck lying on it’s back with live torpedoes still in it’s hold and the Blue Hole – the source of the Esis River in Waterfall Bay.

The journey up the Esis River is one that will stay fresh in my memory for many years!
