Port Lincoln

Port Lincoln is the tuna capital of Australia and reputedly has the highest per person income in the country due to the huge amounts of money earned in the dangerous & risky, but highly lucrative, fishing industry.

It is also one of the three places in the world where it is possible to see the Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias), the ultimate underwater predator - the other two locations are the Isla de Guadalupe on the Pacific Ocean side of the Mexican Baja Peninsular and Dyer Island, near Gansbaai in South Africa.

There are two operators to choose from - Rodney Fox who was one of the original pioneers of cage diving with the Great White, or White Pointer as it known in Australia, and has been running expeditions with his son Andrew since 1965. They have a new boat called the Princess II, which has replaced the aging Falie, and operate from Adelaide - which means a long journey to get down to the Port Lincoln area.

The alternative is Rolf Czabayski on the Calypso Star, a new 57ft long aluminum hull boat, that operates from Port Lincoln itself. Rolf is a classic example of "poacher turned gamekeeper" as he used to hunt the Great Whites before they became a protected species and more valuable alive than dead on the end of very strong fishing line!

I have done four Great White trips in the last 10 years, the first back in 1996 was a disaster - seven days out at the Neptune Islands and we never saw a thing.....so when I went back in June 2003 for my first trip on Calypso I was fairly pessimistic about our chances of seeing sharks but within a couple of hours of arriving at Dangerous Reef, two hours from Port Lincoln, we had the first of many sharks swimming around the boat.

I went back on Calypso Star twice more - January & March 2004 - but to the Neptune Islands & it's clear blue waters and again we had sharks around the boat within a couple of hours and throughout the four days we were there. There is no guarantee with these creatures, but if they show it has to be one of the ultimate marine experiences!
