Underwater Photography in the Indo-Pacific

Seraya Secrets

Seraya Secrets is the house reef of Scuba Seraya, a dive resort located about 3km east from Tulamben Bay and the Liberty Wreck.

The resort was established in 2003 by Patrick Schwartz, a Bali based Swiss expat, and focused on offered diving on all the Tulamben sites using inflatable boats until Christiane Waldrich (see My Private Garden) discovered the quite amazing diversity that is literally on the doorstep of the resort.

The critter diving at Seraya Secrets can be quite astounding and the site has established a "must dive" reputation, amongst underwater photographers. I first dived there at the end of 2005, when I spent a week at the resort over Xmas and really enjoyed the diving.

I think that one of the best aspects of basing yourself at Seraya is that it's possible to do an early morning dive on the Liberty wreck using the resort's inflatable, so that you get there before all the dive tourists.

Then you can head back to the resort for breakfast and dive Seraya Secrets as much as you want because it's right in front of the resort!

One of the highlights of Seraya is the harlequin shrimps that appear to be almost available on demand.

Similarly there always seems to be Coleman Shrimps to be found!

I did several dives at Seraya Secrets over Xmas 2007 as part of a macro trip I did along the North Coast of Bali.

Half of those dives were from the resort which has undergone a series of upgrades & renovations since I was last there and a new restaurant & kitchen have been built.

I was most impressed that the new restaurant has a proper coffee machine and enjoyed numerous cappuccinos in between dives....

The other half of my dives were conducted from the public access site further up the beach from the resort, which I did not know about till we drove there one day.

Obviously not quite as salubrious as Scuba Seraya, but there is running water to rinse away the salt and a local villager will look after any equipment left at the shelter whilst you are diving.

But no cappuccino machine I am afraid....
